Islington school children compete in ‘Music for Youth’
The world’s largest Youth Music festival came to LSO at St Luke’s on Old
Street on Wednesday 9 March, and Islington’s school bands and choirs played a
leading role in the regional event.
Councillor James Kempton, executive member for children said
"It's wonderful to see so many Islington schools taking part in this
prestigious competition and the children's enjoyment was evident in the music
and performances. I want our schools to be places of high achievement but that
most definitely includes opportunities to do well at music and the other
performing arts."
Highbury Fields School had three bands competing: Drums, Jazz Band, Junior
Jazz (Wind Band); and two choirs: Senior Choir and Junior Choir
The Islington Jazz Band and Islington Jazz Ensemble, made up of school
children from across the borough, took part.
The Newington Green Primary Fiddle Group, Rotherfield School Choir, and St
John's School Band gave performances.
Islington’s specialist Arts and Media College (IAMS) entered its Gospel Vocal
Ensemble, Junior Vocal Ensemble, and Samba Band - all are from Saturday Music
@ IAMS.
After the regional events have been completed, 300 successful bands and choirs
will go forward to the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham in
July, and the top 30 performers will take part in Music for Youth Schools Prom
Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in November.
