Central Foundation pupil wins ‘Find a Voice’ public speaking competition

15-year-old Yacine Sekkoum of Central Foundation School won the finals of the  ‘Find Your Voice - Find A Job’ public speaking competition on Weds 16 March. He was competing against 14 finalists, selected from over 350 Islington school pupils who took part in workshops funded by the Islington Chamber of Commerce, and aimed at providing young people with the presentation skills that will help them find a job.

The “Find a voice - find a Job” programme has been a coordinated effort involving Islington Education Business Partnership, Islington Chamber of Commerce, CEA @ Islington and SpeakersBank. The workshop-based course has been divided into three sessions all of which aim to support students develop their communication skills to enhance their employability.

Sue Warner, Director, Speakersbank said, “Our 2005 finalists have clearly shown what can be achieved through public speaking; it generates increased self confidence, self belief and self esteem. Everyone has the ability to speak out in public; all they need is the opportunity and encouragement. I feel that programmes such as this provide that essential encouragement and opportunity to provide pupils with a skill, which will benefit them not just in a working environment, but in all aspects of their life. In my opinion schemes like Find a Voice Find a Job should be made available to pupils throughout the UK.’
