EGA is an excellent school

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College (EGA) has received high praise from OfSTED following its recent inspection in January 2005. The college is rated as ‘excellent’ across the board - in achievement, quality of education, college ethos and leadership and management.

According to the report EGA is ‘an excellent college with many outstanding features’:

Consistently good and very good teaching means the students’ achievement is excellent.

The college community, at all levels, provides a shining example of high expectations, developing self esteem and racial harmony in which the respect for and celebration of the similarities and differences evident in a rich and diverse cultural community are at the heart of all its work.

The wide range of activity arising from becoming a language college… has contributed significantly to raising achievement and aspiration across the college.

Jill Coughlan, who retired from her headship at EGA in March this year, was given significant praise for her outstanding leadership. The governing body were also commended for their good support to the college.

Since the school’s last inspection in November 1998, inspectors have judged that the school has made ‘excellent improvement’, particularly in the ‘transformational changes to the quality of education provided’. The college has now gained national recognition, particularly as a specialist Language College and a Full Service Extended School. The college was also awarded the prestigious Artsmark Gold award in 2002. The report highlights that ‘these changes in status and national awards are not easily gained and are a testimony to the overall excellent provision’.

Bill Clark, Director of Schools’ Services, CEA@Islington said: ‘EGA has been rated as 'excellent' by OfSTED inspectors which is a fantastic achievement and one which the staff, pupils, parents and governors should be extremely proud of. The inspection report recognises the hard work, determination and many achievements of the whole school community. It is clear that the whole school is committed to the highest standards and I would like to congratulate them all on their well-deserved success.’

Councillor James Kempton, executive member for children said: ‘EGA is one of Islington's highest achieving schools - it is a nationally recognised language college providing a full range of out of hours provision. Each time OfSTED visit an Islington school it has improved and EGA has just received the best ever OfSTED report for an Islington school, with inspectors rating it excellent. Inspectors said EGA was 'an excellent college with many outstanding features where consistently good and very good teaching means the students’ achievement is excellent'. EGA is school that we can all be proud of, congratulations to everyone.’
