School children with designs on safer roads
9-year-old Sagal Nuh, a Year 4 pupil at Newington Green school, won a brand
new bicycle for her poster design to accompany the signs for the 20mph zone in
the Mildmay Area.
Children from Newington Green and St Judes & St Pauls primary schools
submitted over 100 designs for the sign. Ward councillor Meral Ece selected
the winner, and attended a school assembly to present the prize on Friday 11
February, along with Council officers Mehmet Mazhar, Head of Traffic and
Engineering, Costas Jacovou, Project Manager for the scheme and Erin Cooper
from the Road Safety team.
Councillor Ece praised Sagal’s design for being ‘clear and strong’. The design
will appear below the 20mph zone signs that will be put up at the end of March
when the works are complete.
The 20mph zone is being introduced to reduce the number of road traffic
accidents in the area after statistics showed that it was higher than the
borough average. The safety scheme is accompanied by a ban on lorries over 7.5
tons.
