New cup stacking craze takes over Rotherfield

Over 100 Rotherfield school pupils aged between 7-11 took part in the school’s first ever ‘Cup Stacking’ competition on Friday 15 April. The aim of the game is to build a number of plastic tumblers up into pyramids and down again in a specific order, as quickly as possible. The children were timed performing the ‘3-6-3’ stack sequence and the fastest in each year group won a medal and a certificate.

Cup stacking is a popular sport in American schools and is fast becoming widely known across the UK. The game has been shown to have a number of positive benefits to a child’s learning and development, and acquisition and enhancement of rudimentary motor skills.

Speed Stacks, an organisation that teaches children the sport of cup stacking, states that the main benefits of the game are:

To promote hand-eye coordination and ambidexterity; To give students the opportunity to use both sides of their body and brain to improve bilateral proficiency; To encourage students to set goals through establishing personal records; To reinforce the value of teamwork and the importance of never giving up; To have a lot of fun

Pania Moloney, Senior Learning Mentor, Rotherfield School said: ‘Recent research into cup stacking has shown that the fast-paced game positively improves children’s hand-eye co-ordination and reaction time.

‘It is so great that the children enjoy playing the game so much. They are all very excited about the intra-borough tournament that is organised for June this year as part of Education Week.’
