International table tennis star inspires Islington pupils
There was a great atmosphere at Highbury Grove School yesterday (Wednesday 13
April) for the finals of the first ever intra-borough table tennis
competition. Players from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson walked away victorious in
both girls’ events. In the boys’ competition, Holloway B team beat Holloway A
team in an exciting under 18 final, while Central Foundation beat Islington
Green boys in the under 14 age group.
After the matches there was an excellent exhibition match between
CEA@Islington’s very own School Sport Co-ordinator (SSCO), Marc Thornley, and
international table tennis star, Marina Zarzyka. Marc managed to win 7 points
off the England’s number nine player, although Marina showed her class to
eventually win a very spirited game.
London Development Officer, Brian Spicer, also attended the event and was very
impressed with the Islington talent on show. He gave the students valuable
information on local clubs and opportunities in the borough to further their
table tennis skills.
Sarah Fretwell, Partnership Development Manager, CEA@Islington said: ‘The
table tennis event was a huge success and I would like to congratulate all the
finalists for making it such a thrilling competition. Table tennis should be a
very popular event in Islington if London wins the Olympic bid, as the Sobell
Leisure Centre will be the designated table tennis training venue!’
