Islington Pupil Parliament - moving forward

Islington’s Pupil Parliament (IPP) held a review and consultation event on Friday 15 April 2005 at the Barnsbury Centre, Offord Road, Islington. The event was an opportunity for the students to review and evaluate the work of the pupil parliament over the last year and to make recommendations for the future priorities of the IPP.

The IPP was established in 2001 to provide a forum to enable pupils to discuss issues that affect them, participate in local decision-making and engage with their local community. Over the past four years it has evolved and developed and currently works with both primary and secondary age pupils.

33 current and previous IPP members from nine Islington schools attended the event where they were asked a range of questions to help them to review the effectiveness of the IPP and to decide what their priorities should be for the future. The leading question was ‘what issues do you feel strongly about?’. Answers ranged from playground equipment and after school clubs to bullying and school meals. These answers will help to form the priorities of the IPP for the forthcoming year.

Helen Cameron, PHSE & Citizenship Advisory Teacher, CEA@Islington said: ‘This meeting was an opportunity to consolidate the experiences of the last four years and to begin planning how to take the parliament forward with pupils’ ideas, interests and experiences being central to this process. The pupils certainly engaged with the issues and worked hard and enthusiastically throughout the meeting.

‘Pupils had opportunities to share ideas and work together with their peers from other schools. The activities included writing an advert for a pupil parliament member, sharing experiences of the parliament so far through recording interviews with each other, explaining the pupil parliament to an alien and creating a promotional radio programme. It was a very positive morning and we are looking forward to working with pupils from across Islington schools.’
