Mount Carmel students win CREST awards

Science celebration event is huge success

Science students from Islington schools were celebrating their work last night at a special event at London Metropolitan University. Professor Christopher Brandford-White, Director of Health and Research at London Metropolitan University, presented 50 Islington secondary school students with Bronze and Silver CREST awards for their science project work over the past school year. Primary pupils also enjoyed a day of science investigations, tutored by students from London Metropolitan University.

Staff from Islington schools, parents and education officers from the borough turned out to the event to learn more about the ‘Science Alliance’ between London Metropolitan University and CEA@Islington’s Excellence in Cities (EiC) service. The Science Alliance is a mechanism for extending and enriching the science education of pupils in Islington schools and giving pupils an opportunity to be involved in a range of exciting science enrichment activities as they move from Key Stage 1 (Year 2) to Key Stage 4 (Year 11).

Mary Linington, Excellence in Cities Manager, CEA@Islington, said: ‘It is so great that these children are both enjoying and achieving highly in science. We need to encourage children to participate in science activities and ensure that there is wide access to scientific initiatives both locally and nationally. Working with the LMU and with BA CREST helps us to achieve both these objectives in Islington. This event will help us to raise the profile of science in the borough. This is particularly important as both interest in science, and standards, seem to be slipping nationally.’
