St Luke's win their first borough competition
St Luke’s Primary School won their first borough competition last Thursday (19
May 2005) at Paradise Park, beating Montem Primary School in the final of the
annual primary school tag rugby tournament. St Luke’s scored a golden try in
extra time to secure victory in the in the nail-biting final that ended 2–2 at
fulltime.
25 primary school teams, made up of 10 and 11 year-old boys and girls,
competed in this year’s tournament. Sarah Fretwell, Manager of CEA@Islington’s
School Sports Co-ordinator Programme (SSCO) said: ‘The level of rugby has
developed and improved significantly over the past three years, making this
competition harder to win. All matches were fiercely fought this year, with at
least four of the knockout games going to extra time and being won with golden
tries! Congratulations to St Luke’s Primary School who will now represent
Islington at the London Mini Games on 30 June 2005 at Crystal Palace.’
Thornhill Primary School won the Fair Play award for good sportsmanship and
behaviour. Other nominees for this trophy were Clerkenwell and Canonbury
primary schools and Samuel Rhodes Special School.
The tag tournament was organised by CEA@Islington’s School Sports Co-ordinator
(SSCO) programme and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to raise the level of
rugby in Islington to club standard. This year has seen the exciting
development of the first rugby club in Islington – the Shoreditch Sharks. The
youngsters at this year’s festival will be able to take their rugby further by
attending free sessions at the Shoreditch Sharks’ club every Sunday from
10.00am to 11.30am.
