Newington Green pupils enjoy their breakfast

Champion's breakfast for punctual pupils

Punctual Newington Green school pupils are being rewarded for their promptness with a ‘Champion’s Breakfast’ in the staff room before school every Monday morning. Pupils’ punctuality has improved significantly (from 65% - 90%) since the initiative began in September 2004.

Each week punctuality is monitored and recorded for each class. The class with the best punctuality record for the week is rewarded with a class breakfast on the following Monday morning before school starts. The children are allowed to eat their breakfast, which includes fresh fruit salad, a selection of fruit juices, cereal and toast, in the staff room, a room normally out of bounds to students. The pupils are also given a range of newspapers and books to read over their meal.

Jennifer Slocombe, Learning Mentor at Newington Green School said: ‘The children are so excited by the prospect of this breakfast that they are competing with one another to be the most punctual! The number of latecomers to school has dramatically decreased since we introduced the ‘Champion’s Breakfast’. This is a fantastic achievement in such a short space of time.’
