Mentor and mentee work together

Celebrating those who aim higher

Event: Aimhigher Mentor Celebration

Date: Thursday 23rd June 2005

Time: 4.30 - 6.30pm

Venue: Council Chamber, Islington Town Hall, Upper Street, N1

Headteachers, School Mentoring Co-ordinators, mentors and mentees will be attending an event on Thursday 23 June 2005 to celebrate the successful first year of the Aimhigher Mentoring Programme in Islington secondary schools.

The Aimhigher Mentoring Programme aims to raise the aspirations of, and encourage young people into further and higher education through the 1:1 support and guidance of a mentor*. Excellence in Cities, CEA@Islington, delivers this service across the secondary schools in Islington, targeting pupils in Years 9 – 11.

This year, the programme has trained, placed and supported 90 volunteer mentors across all Islington Secondary Schools. The hard work and dedication of these mentors, and their mentees, will be celebrated at the event on Thursday.

The scheme has proved to have many advantages to both mentors and mentees. Quotes from mentors include:

“I am more confident and a better listener"

"I enjoyed helping my mentee and encouraging her aspirations for the future. I felt I was making a positive contribution to my community and provided her with a good role model"

"My mentee has learnt to believe in his potential to do well at school. I think he has gained confidence"

The benefits to the mentees include increased confidence and self-esteem, careers guidance and revision help and the opportunity to have someone to listen to them in a one-on-one situation. Quotes from mentees include:

"It made me think more about going to college and university and that there's more to life than hanging around"

“The best thing about having a mentor is having a role model to look up to and someone I can talk to and help me get through stressful times"

“My mentor helped me to think about the different educational options in college"
