Primary school pupils show their support for London's 2012 bid
Eight pupils from Islington primary schools have won prizes in a poster
competition sponsored by London 2012, Islington Council and CEA@Islington’s
School Sports Co-ordinator Programme (SSCO), confirming their support of
London’s Olympic bid.
Over 1200 pupils from 15 primary schools entered the competition to design a
poster around the themes of ‘‘Backing the bid’, London and Sport. Each winner
received a £25 sports shop voucher and London 2012 t-shirt and the runners up
were awarded an SSCO baseball cap. All winning entries were then sent to the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) via the London 2012 team to show
Islington children’s support for the bid.’
Sarah Fretwell, Manager of CEA@Islington’s School Sport Co-ordinator Programme
and competition judge said: ‘The standard of entries was so high that it was
extremely difficult to pick a winner. The high number of entries shows that
Islington school children really want the Olympics to come to London and are
really behind the 2012 bid. Thank you to Matthew Bull, PE Co-ordinator at
Thornhill Primary School for his organisation and help in judging the
competition. Well done to all the winners!’
Councillor Laura Willoughby said: ‘With the Olympic decision looming we felt
it was important to find a way to encourage Islington children to show their
support for London’s attempt to hold the 2012 Olympics. The children achieved
this by designing posters that show how passionate they are about sport.’
