Conference to promote partnership with parents

CEA@Islington has organised a conference entitled ‘Partnership with Parents:
making it work for schools’. The conference aim is to provide an opportunity
to explore the importance and implications of parental involvement in their
children’s education for schools.
Headteachers, governors, teachers, learning mentors and other education staff
from Islington schools will be attending the event Thursday 7 July 2005 at the
Barnsbury Centre, Offord Road, N1 1QF. The day will consist of a range of
keynote speeches and workshops for all delegates.
Professor Charles Desforges from the University of Exeter will be speaking on
the impact of parental involvement on pupil achievement, and Helen James,
Early Excellence Co-ordinator from Islington Sure Start South will be looking
at involving parents from the start.
Workshops include:

Family learning – how schools can provide successful learning for families

Giving real opportunities to parents – how schools can help parents to take
the first steps in learning and support future progression

Bringing parents into the classroom

Engaging parents from ethnic minorities
Ann Braham, CEA@Islington’s Parental Involvement Officer said: ‘Parents and
guardians can have an extremely large and positive impact on their child’s
education. This conference will be a fantastic opportunity to discuss the
implications of parental involvement and to look at ways to engage and involve
more parents in their child’s education.’
