Hungerford primary children and parents take GCSEs
A group of eight children from
Hungerford Primary School and their parents studied together for a GCSE in
Turkish, passing their exams together this summer.
Most were able to come and pick up their certificates this week from
Hungerford Headteacher Paul Larkey, and celebrate their achievement.
“It wasn’t as hard as I expected.” Said 11-year-old Guler Ozdemir, who got a
grade B and is now a year 7 pupil at
Holloway School. “It’s nice to already have a qualification and I’ll feel
more confident about sitting my GCSEs later on. I’d definitely encourage other
children and parents to do it.”
Three of the youngest children are now year 6 pupils at Hungerford, while the
others have moved into year 7 at Holloway School and were proudly wearing
their new school uniforms.
Parent Senem Coskun came in to collect her certificate and that of her son
11-year-old Onur. The opportunity for adults to study for a qualification at a
local school is part of a range of services now being offered to the community
by Islington’s "extended
schools".
“I’m delighted for the children and their parents. Extending the services in
our school has been very good for our relationships with the community,” said
Hungerford Headteacher Paul Larkey.
Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children said:
“Congratulations to the children and parents on their qualifications. The
Council and CEA@Islington are working together to support all schools to
develop their extended services and Hungerford is the latest example of the
benefits and community involvement that this approach is achieving.”
