Canonbury pupils name classes after Islington legends

Arsenal legend Charlie George visited Canonbury Primary School this morning to meet the children in "his" class. The recently named "Charlie George" Year Three class presented the football star with gifts in honour of his visit and because today is his 55th birthday.

Every class in Canonbury School is now named after a famous person who has links with the borough of Islington. Class names include Hugh Myddelton, Charles Lamb, George Orwell, Edward Lear, Kate Greenaway and Benjamin Britten.

Jay Henderson, Canonbury School Headteacher said: "Since we named the classes, the children have spent a long time researching the people their classes are named after. We wanted the children to be appreciative of their local history and the breadth of famous people who are in some way linked with the borough.

"It was fantastic for the children to meet Charlie George today – they were particularly thrilled that he chose to come on his birthday."
