Young Islington journalists scoop some awards
Budding young reporters were presented with recognition awards on Tuesday 11
October for their attendance at a journalism course at City University as part
of CEA@Islington’s Gifted &
Talented programme.
During the summer term 12 Year 9 and 10 students from Islington secondary
schools took part in a radio journalism course at
City University. 12 other students attended a television journalism course
at the same time. The students interviewed people for radio and television
features on current issues affecting Islington. In just four days, the young
journalists learnt interviewing and reporting techniques and how to use these
skills to produce good quality shows.
Mary Linington, Excellence in Cities
Manager, CEA@Islington said: ‘The students have had a real insight into the
world of journalism during this project and have benefited from learning at
university level. The presentations will recognise and reward the achievements
of these potential future journalists.’
This project was run by CEA@Islington in collaboration with the
London Borough of Islington and
City University as part of the
Excellence in Cities scheme.
Maarg Kansay, a Highbury
Grove student who attended the radio journalism course said: ‘I feel that
going on this course has developed my radio skills, such as using a mini-disc
recorder. I have also improved my speaking skills, for example, projecting my
voice over background noises. I learnt that making a programme was not as easy
as I thought it would be. I enjoyed the course as the other students were very
friendly and the teachers were helpful. I would love to go back next year to
do the TV journalism course. I am seriously considering taking up journalism
as my career.’
