David Lammy MP visits Prior Weston's award winning buidling
David Lammy, MP for Tottenham and Minister for Culture, visited Prior Weston
Primary School this morning (Tuesday 1 November 2005) to look at the school’s
award winning temporary building. The purpose of the visit was to show how
good design is important in educational environments to stimulate learning.
The school was recommended by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
(DCMS).
Earlier this year, Prior Weston won a Royal Institute of British Architecture
(RIBA) award for the temporary school building on Bunhill Row, EC1, which is
due to be replaced by the new Golden Lane Campus in 2007.
RIBA Awards are given for buildings that have high architectural standards and
make a substantial contribution to the local environment. The awards are
annual, and have been running continuously since 1966. According to RIBA, ‘A
temporary building would not normally be considered for an architectural
prize, but this one is a triumph of good sense.’
Prior Weston’s building is designed to be recycled when it is replaced by a
permanent school in three years.
Mary Caven, Prior Weston’s Headteacher said: ‘I am so thrilled that the
Minister chose to visit our school. We’re very proud of the difference this
building has made to our school community.’
Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children, said: ‘Islington
children deserve the best and it’s pleasing to have our efforts recognised by
this internationally prestigious RIBA award.’
