A CBE for one of CEA@Islington's partners

Mike Fischer, founder and Chairman of the Fischer Family Trust, has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to business and charity. The Fischer Family Trust is an independent, non-profit organisation which is involved in undertaking and supporting projects addressing the development of education in the UK. The Trust has been helping to improve education in Islington through CEA@Islington’s North Islington Education Zone since 2000.

Mike co-founded RM, the educational computer company, and was Chief Executive until 1999. The Fischer Family Trust was established soon after.

The North Islington Education Action Zone (NIEAZ) began formally in January 2000 as part of the Education Action Zone (EAZ) initiative that was launched by the Government in 1998. Zones were formed to raise pupils' standards of achievement in areas of social and economic disadvantage by providing additional support.

By 2005 the zone had been transformed into an Excellence in Cities Zone. The zone continues to focus on continuous professional development and early intervention to raise attainment. It encourages collaboration and it has created and sustained strong links between schools and its partners. The Fischer Family Trust continues to provide financial sponsorship worth over £100,000 per annum.

Dr Kirit Modi, Assistant Director, CEA@Islington said: “I would like to congratulate Mike on his great achievement. CEA@Islington and many schools in Islington have greatly benefited from Mike’s enormous contribution to improving education in Islington through the North Islington Education Zone.”

Gaynor Cashin, Director of North Islington Education Zone said: “Mike is delighted to have received the award and wishes to emphasise that many people have contributed to his success. The Trust has been fortunate to work with such committed and capable staff in the North Islington schools supported by our partners at CEA. It is not surprising that we receive recognition well beyond London for the exciting developments here.”

Mike will receive his CBE at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace later in the year.
