NIZ's award-winning team

North Islington Education Zone awarded prestigious ICT award at Olympia

North Islington Education Zone has won the 2005 national Becta ICT in Practice Award for Advice and Support. The NIZ team was presented with their award last week at a special ceremony at BETT – the educational technology show at London Olympia. The ceremony formed part of a wider "Day of Good Practice" organised by Becta and the Times Educational Supplement (TES).

Dr Kirit Modi, Assistant Director, CEA@Islington said: “Congratulations to all at NIZ for receiving such a prestigious award. Becta has recognised NIZ’s ability to inspire and motivate learners and colleagues to improve their use of ICT in teaching across all stages of the curriculum. It is fantastic that NIZ will be used as an example of best practice nationwide.”

Gaynor Cashin, Director of NIZ said: “We won this award in the category called ‘Advice and Support’ which recognises the work that we have done with local schools in the area of professional development. It was great for the team to be able to watch the film that had been made about our work and to share our good practice to leaders in the field throughout the country. It was also rewarding to see the work of Grafton and St Mark’s schools acknowledged at this event.”

The annual Becta awards aim to identify models of excellence and use these to highlight exemplary practice. The awards promote the sharing of good practice with the wider educational community while rewarding individuals who demonstrate exemplary practice using ICT.

NIZ secured the award for commitment to the use of ICT for learning and teaching; understanding the benefits of ICT in raising standards; the ability to inspire and motivate learners and colleagues; and visionary and sustainable ongoing plans.

Visitors to BETT had the opportunity to attend seminars run by all the Becta award winners, including the NIZ.

Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children said: "Many Islington schools are sharing good practice in ICT - it has the capacity to greatly enhance teaching and learning. I am very proud that our Education Zone is now setting the standard for others in London to follow.

“It's an exciting time for education in Islington - new schools and new equipment will bring a lasting legacy, benefiting a whole new generation of kids for years to come."
