Islington schools awarded Quality Mark for basic skills
Four Islington schools have been awarded a Quality Mark from the Basic Skills
Agency for their high standards in literacy, numeracy and language skills. St
John Evangelist, St Joseph’s and St Luke’s primary schools, and Samuel Rhodes
Special School collected their plaques from Alan Wells OBE, Director of the
Basic Skills Agency, at a special ceremony on Wednesday 25 January 2006.
This is the first group of schools in Islington to receive the Quality Mark.
To gain the Primary Quality Mark, each school has had to undertake a rigorous
evaluation procedure to demonstrate a high level of effectiveness in ten key
quality elements. These include setting and targets for pupils’ achievement in
literacy and numeracy. The schools have also had to demonstrate how all school
staff involve parents in improving standards.
Maggie McNeill, CEA@Islington’s School Improvement Officer responsible for
helping the schools gain this prestigious award says: “We are delighted that
the schools have been so successful in gaining the Quality Mark Award. The
award recognises high quality work undertaken by the school staff and
achievement by the pupils. The awarding of the Quality Mark once again
demonstrates the high quality of Islington’s primary and special schools.”
