Islington students at CREST national final
Event: CREST National Finals
Date: Monday 27th February 2006
Time: 6.30 – 7.30pm
Venue: The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace
London SW1Y 5AG
Two former Islington secondary school students will be competing in the
‘Creativity in Engineering, Science and Technology’ (CREST) national finals on
Monday 27 February 2006 at the Royal Society in London.
The finals will be a chance for the students to showcase the scientific
research they did during a work experience placement at London Metropolitan
University (LMU) in 2005. Negin Demali-Amiri, (former pupil at Mount Carmel
Technology College) and Nadir Chowdhury, (former pupil of Central Foundation
Boys’ School) spent three weeks at the university laboratories under the
supervision of Dr Paul Matewele looking at micro-organisms and genetic
engineering.
As a result of this work, both students have been invited to the CREST
national finals to present their projects to the judges.
Bill Clark, Director of Schools’ Services, CEA@Islington said: “These students
worked on a high-level microbiology project at LMU last summer. Their work was
of an exceptionally high standard for 16 year olds, certainly at a level of
many first year undergraduate students. This is an exceptional achievement for
these young people who are amongst only 50 young people from across the UK to
be invited to this event.”
Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children, said: “I have sent a
message of support to our two national "science stars", Negin and Nadir, and I
will be keeping my fingers crossed for them. It's great evidence of the sort
of opportunities we have to stretch high ability pupils in Islington,
especially at a time when nationally the quality of science teaching is under
the spotlight.
“Education in Islington is going places - the most ambitious schools' upgrade
programme in more than a century is delivering facilities fit for the 21st
Century and preparing pupils for employment or further education."
