Lessons go underwater at Highbury Grove
Highbury Grove students working towards their British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC)
certificate in snorkelling were delighted that their new found underwater
skills were a great help in retrieving foil-wrapped Easter eggs from the deep
end of the pool.
Eighteen students in Year 8 spent four weekly sessions working with volunteer
scuba instructors from Holborn BSAC, learning how to use snorkelling
equipment, and taking part in try-dives, which allowed them to explore the
pool on scuba equipment.
“It’s an exciting activity that keeps you fit and active, and it teaches
students about the physics of pressure, and the differences you experience
between being in air and submerged underwater – there’s quite a lot of science
involved.” Explained Dr David Fletcher, Holborn BSAC’s training officer.
The students took to the activity – literally - like ducks to water.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever done!” Enthused 12-year-old Anthony Middlebrook
after his scuba diving adventure. The snorkelling and scuba course was offered
by Highbury Grove as part of student enrichment activities – learning
opportunities that engage the interest of students and go beyond the standard
school curriculum.
An underwater photographer was on hand to capture photographs of the event for
every student taking part.
