Top arts award for Ashmount Primary School
Ashmount Primary School is celebrating after the Arts Council announced they
had been awarded an ‘Artsmark Silver’.
Councillor Ursula Woolley, Islington’s Executive Member for Children & Young
People, presented the school with their Artsmark at a special assembly this
week (Wednesday 28 June 2006). Ashmount pupils showcased their artistic
talents at the assembly, including a recorder recital, street dancing and
artwork display, illustrating why the school has been awarded such a
prestigious art award.
Artsmark is the national arts award for schools that demonstrate a commitment
to developing their arts provision – from drama to music, design to
literature, dance to sculpture. The scheme also encourages schools to work in
partnership with artists and arts organisations. The arts can transform lives
and raise aspirations and improving opportunities for young people and their
local communities to engage with the arts is a key priority for the Arts
Council.
Sally Greener, Ashmount School’s head of art said: “The children and staff
have worked really hard to achieve this Artsmark and it is wonderful that all
the creativity that is happening at the school is being recognised and
rewarded.”
Pana McGee, Headteacher of Ashmount School, said: “This is a fantastic
achievement and we are delighted to be ending the school year with such
positive news. We are looking forward to going from strength to strength in
the next academic year.”
Councillor Ursula Woolley, Executive Member for Children and Young People,
said: “Congratulations to Ashmount School for receiving their Artsmark award –
they should be very proud of their achievement. I believe that a rich and
varied arts curriculum adds significantly to a child’s educational experience
and provides a powerful stimulus for learning. I thoroughly enjoyed this
morning’s assembly, seeing the children be so creative and expressive through
music and art.”
