Pooles Park detectives meet real police dog

Budding police detectives from Pooles Park Primary School were treated to a visit by a police detective dog last week at their after school club. Jake, a three-year-old Alsatian, was brought to the school to teach the children about the amazing sensory skills of police dogs and how they can help police officers to solve crimes.

Jake’s visit was part of a programme of activities for the weekly Pooles Park ‘Detectives Club’. The after school club is for years 3 and 4 children and is run by the Finsbury Park Safer Neighbourhood Police Team. The club encourages children to:

  • learn about the type of work that police officers do;

  • build relationships between families and the police who patrol the local area;

  • further develop community links between local agencies and the school.

Each week the mini-detectives undertake a range of police tasks including writing police reports, spotting crimes taking place on a training video, note writing and completing a detective trail finder activity. The club has also had visits from the Undercover Unit, the Fire Brigade and the Dog Team.

Simon Evans, Pooles Park Primary School’s Extended Learning Manager said: “The children really enjoy this new club and it has given some of them aspirations of their own for the future. Clubs at our school are now delivered by volunteers, parents/carers, teaching assistants, teachers and now police officers which is beneficial when building community links.”

Rished Badi, a Year 4 pupil at Pooles Park and a member of the Detectives Club said: “I really enjoy learning about being a detective and I would love to do this job when I get older.”
