Students with Rageh Omaar

High flying students meet Rageh Omaar

Students from Islington secondary schools stole the limelight at CEA@Islington's national conference on raising Somali achievement on Monday 12th February when they addressed an audience of educators about what really helps Somali students to achieve in schools.

The 12 students from Highbury Grove, EGA, Holloway and IAMS told the packed audience that high teacher expectations, good classroom control, provision of good quality homework clubs and feeling that their teachers believed in them were all key to helping Somali students achieve at school. The students also emphasised that their own commitment to good attendance, regular homework and keeping out of gangs and trouble is crucial to helping them to thrive in school.

The conference finished with an inspirational speech from Rageh Omaar, former BBC Africa Correspondent and the UK's most famous Somali.

Sara McLaughlin from CEA@Islington’s EMAS Team said: “Somali students' achievement is on the rise in Islington, and it is easy to see why with students of this calibre. The conference was an unforgettable experience for us all.”
