New North pupils bury a time capsule for children of the future
New North Community School pupils have buried a time capsule in the grounds of
their new school so that pupils of the future will have a glimpse of what life
was like for children in 2007.
The Year 3 pupils buried the capsule in the grounds of their new school
building on Popham Road, due to be opened later this year. The aluminium time
capsule contained about 20 objects which the pupils felt epitomised “today’s
children”, including:
-
A Metro newspaper from the day of the burial
-
A copy of the New North Community School logo
-
Examples of today’s money
-
Pencil and rubber
-
Post-it notes
-
London Underground/ bus route map
-
Indian and Chinese take away menus
-
Programme of events at Sadler’s Wells Theatre
The pupils hope that time capsule will be unearthed in 1000 years’ time.
Chris Mooney, EMA Manager at New North Community School said: “This project
was very much focused on speaking and listening and involved the children
bringing items from home and discussing whether they were appropriate to go in
the time capsule.
“The children put a lot of thought into what items they wanted to include in
the capsule so that they can give a clear picture of what their life is like
today. All the children are really excited about the prospect of the capsule
being dug up in 1000 years’ time.”
Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Children and
Young People, said: “This time capsule is a lovely way of celebrating what
promises to be a great new school. This year will see the start of our huge
investment programme to rebuild and refurbish Islington’s schools. We’re
building a better future for our children – that’s well worth looking forward
to."
