Montem School launches new website - and cyber homework!
Montem primary school has just launched its online resources for pupils and
parents, with a website that has the children coming back for more.
“We asked the children what they wanted to be able to do on the website, and
the answer that came back was games and homework,” explained deputy
headteacher Mathew Kleiner-Mann.
All children at the school received training on how to go online and stay safe
during an Internet Safety Week. “We talked about the fact that there are bad
people out there, and discussed the idea of e-strangers. By comparing the
situation to a known story, such as Little Red Riding Hood, the children can
quickly grasp that there are people who are pretending to be something that
they are not, and that this can be dangerous.”
Armed with this knowledge, the children are in a better position to use the
internet for positive learning experiences.
“I think the new website is great and my favourite thing on it is the Mountain
Game,” enthused 10-year-old Marcia Mckenzie. Marcia was one of a number of
children who tested out the web pages for the school before the project went
live.
The website is also set to appeal to parents, with links to online admissions,
online applications for Free School Meals, and information about housing.
Parents can also find the latest school news as well as checking out what
homework has been set for their child.
Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and
Young People, said: "It's great that Montem is getting ahead in making sure
all its pupils are at home with the Internet for school work and for fun - and
that they know how to use it safely. I'm looking forward to the day when our
investment in Islington schools means that high-tech computer use is part and
parcel of every day at school and home for all Islington school children.”
