Fire safety warning from Commander as Islington’s Blue Watch present ‘At the Fire Station’ children’s book
Firefighters from Islington’s Blue Watch visited William Tyndale school with
their fire engine to present the new children’s book ‘At the Fire Station’.
Islington’s Mayor, Jyoti Vaja, joined an excited Year 5, keen to take a closer
look at both the fire engine and the book.
The book was created by author Ruth Thomson in close cooperation with the Fire
Brigade and all the photos feature members of Islington’s Blue Watch. In
return for the participation of Blue Watch, the publisher, Wayland, is supply
a free copy of the book to every Islington primary school.
London Fire Brigade Borough Commander for Islington, Peter Cowup said: “Staff
at Islington fire station and myself, were delighted to work with the author
and publishers of this book to help explain the varied role of the fire
service in the community. We are also delighted that the publishers agreed to
our request to provide every primary school in Islington with a free copy of
the book.
As well as improving their understanding of what the Brigade does at
emergencies, we hope the young readers, and their parents or carers, will use
this book to learn about the importance of preventing fires in the first place
and having at least one working smoke alarm in their home.”
Local people who would like a free home fire safety check, and a free smoke
alarm if you need one, should call the Brigade on 08000 28 44 28.
