An Anti-Bullying Policy for Islington!

Staff and volunteers in schools and across all children and young people’s settings are being asked to respond to a consultation on a new Anti-Bullying Policy for the borough.

The Policy has been drafted by a multi-agency Anti-Bullying Steering Group, which has a wide membership from schools to parks and green spaces, leisure, youth services and the Safer Schools police for example. The Policy was also informed by the Islington BeatBullying Youth Group.

Islington is working towards being a bully-free zone and this Policy will be the first step in a highly visible campaign across the whole borough. It is hoped that partners from all children and young people’s settings will get involved in this campaign, private, voluntary and statutory.

A consultation response sheet has been produced to make it easier for colleagues to respond to the draft policy with their views and comments. Staff and volunteers across play, educational and youth settings have invaluable knowledge of what bullying is, and how to prevent and respond to it when it happens. This is why as many people as possible are being encouraged to take a moment to read and respond to this consultation.

Islington’s Anti-Bullying Co-ordinator Finn Mackay said “we want to make use of all the expertise in our borough to make sure this Policy matters to everyone and makes a difference to the lives of children and young people in Islington”.

The Policy will be followed by Toolkits for schools on preventing and responding to bullying and the provision of training and resources for all partners. The finished Policy will be launched in September and many activities are being planned for this year’s National Anti-Bullying Week 19th – 23rd November, the theme of which is ‘school & the community”.

The draft policy and consultation response sheet are downloadable from this site and responses can be emailed, faxed or posted to the Social Inclusion Unit, full details are on the consultation response sheet.
