Islington exceeds national target for PE and school sport
Islington has exceeded the national target for weekly pupil participation in
Physical Education (P.E.), according the figures released by the Department
for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) for school year 2006-07.
The DCSF figures show that 88% of Islington schoolchildren are participating
in at least two hours of high quality P.E. and out of school hours sport every
week. This figure is up from 75% of schoolchildren in the 2005-06 school year;
a massive 13% increase. The national target was 80%.
The results come from a compulsory nationwide P.E., School Sport and Club
Links (PESSCL) survey, which also announced that 36 Islington primary schools
have been awarded an Active Mark award, 4 secondary schools achieved the
Sportsmark award and 3 special schools achieved the Activemark and Sportsmark
award for sporting excellence.
In addition to this fantastic result, Islington School Sport Partnership won a
national award at the School Sport Conference in November. Out of 450 School
Sport Partnerships national wide Partnership’s were asked to submit
applications from one of seven categories. Each category had a winner and
runner up award.
Islington won the Sky award - using the power of sport to raise standards
across the whole school, for their work around an Islington Fair Play charter.
Resources and a DVD were developed for school sport events, but some schools
also use them in assemblies and in the curriculum. Partnership Development
Manager, Sarah Fretwell, was awarded a prize of £1,500 of photographic/video
equipment for the Partnership and received a certificate from Olympic athletes
Dame Kelly Holmes, Darren Campbell and Jack Eatherley from Sky (pictured).
Sarah Fretwell, Manager of CEA@Islington’s School Sport Partnership said: “I
am very proud that Islington Schools have achieved the national target this
year. This immense improvement in participation is to the credit of pro-active
head teachers, teachers, supportive staff and hard working students. It is
also a bonus to be National award winners and gives recognition to what the
team are trying to achieve’.
