Deciding on the right school for your child

Deciding on the right school for your child

Before you decide which schools to apply for, you should collect as much information as possible. This will help you to make realistic preferences. You can do this by:

  • talking to your child's primary school headteacher;
  • reading information about each of the schools in the secondary school booklet
  • asking each school for a copy of its prospectus;
  • getting a copy of the exam results;
  • for Islington schools you can contact Cambridge Education @ Islington, (Phone: 020 7527 5698, and for schools outside Islington you should contact the borough in which the school is located);
  • going to the special open days and evenings which each school holds; and
  • contacting the School Admissions Section for the area that the school is based. For Islington schools contact Cambridge Education@ Islington on 020 7527 5836. For schools outside Islington the contact numbers of all London schools admissions sections can be found at the back of this booklet. They can tell you how likely your child is to get a place at your preferred school.

Deciding on a preferred school for your child is an important decision. We hope the following advice will help you make the right choice. Do:

  • make time to visit the school;
  • ask questions about anything that worries you; and
  • talk to the headteacher about your child.
  • view the schools website

Do not:

  • think that good exam results are the only important things; or
  • judge a school just by what others say - go and see for yourself.
