Learning Plus: How we support Schools
Advice
The Learning Plus Primary and Secondary Advisors are happy to visit schools,
to discuss and advise on OSHL programmes. They can help plan a balanced
programme, taking into account school development plans, the needs of pupils
and the school’s existing facilities.
The Learning Plus Guide to OSHL
The guide has been sent to all Islington schools and is intended primarily for
Headteachers and OSHL Co-ordinators. It is in three sections. The first
section provides information on planning, running, monitoring and evaluating
OSHL activities and programmes. The second part lists useful contacts,
publications and websites to help support school OSHL programmes, including
fundraising information. The final section contains details of over 100
organisations and individuals that provide OSHL activities to schools, grouped
by subject area. For an electronic copy contact Learning
Plus.
Newsletter
The Schools Plus Newsletter
is produced termly. It contains features on good practice in local schools and
community settings, suggestions for new activities, funding advice and
information on forthcoming training and events. The newsletter is sent to
Islington schools and to all educational provider organisations on our mailing
list. For further copies contact Learning
Plus.
Staff training
We provide regular training in many aspects of Out of School Hours Learning,
for OSHL co-ordinators, other school staff and parents. Contact the Learning
Plus Team for more information.
Information on funding opportunities
We are able to provide information on funding opportunities for OSHL
activities, and assistance with bids to schools and community providers. We
have extensive information on fundraising in our office. Contact Learning
Plus if you would like a copy of our Fundraising Resource pages.
Contacts
We can provide contacts in a range of areas relating to OSHL and help schools
to set up partnerships with other organisations.
Membership of ContinYou
At present Learning Plus pays for all schools in Islington to be members of
ContinYou, formerly Education Extra. ContinYou
is a national community learning charity that promotes Out of School Hours
Learning. They produce a termly magazine and regular news bulletins.
Quality Assurance
Learning Plus can support school to gain recognition from a DfES recognised
quality assurance scheme for Out of School Hours Learning, called Quality
in Study Support (QiSS).
University of the First Age (UFA)
Learning Plus contributes to Islington’s UFA programme, which is managed by EiC
(Excellence In Cities) in Cambridge Education @ Islington. We contribute to
training courses and activity planning, and offer support to schools using UFA
techniques in Breakfast Clubs and OSHL activities. We have Speed Stacks and
UFA resources available for loan from the Education
Library Service at the Barnsbury Complex.
Breakfast Clubs
We provide support and advice on all aspects of setting up and maintaining
breakfast clubs, including funding, running activities and food. Contact
Learning
Plus for more information.
