Gifted and Talented Islington

Gifted and Talented (G&T) is the strand of Excellence in Cities (EiC) that addresses the needs of the most able students in Islington’s schools. The programme is devised and delivered locally by schools, working in partnership with Cambridge Education @ Islington. The main aim of this collaborative approach is to raise attainment through the use of a variety of strategies. This enables provision to be tailored to the needs of each school and each pupil, meaning that there is no ‘one size fits all’ model.

The principal aim of this work is to raise attainment by:

  • successful identification of the gifted and talented cohort.

  • ensuring that schools offer a wide range of opportunities and a high level of challenge to all, so that all pupils’ talents are recognised and developed;

  • supporting and enhancing the teaching and learning that takes place in all classrooms;

  • helping gifted and talented pupils develop their skills and achievement to the highest possible levels.

  • to help create and promote an ethos that values high achievement across all schools, as well as across the whole community.

The team works with schools to ensure that attainment is raised for all G&T pupils and provides in-school and in-class support and organises and delivers provision for G&T pupils. Over the last 8 years the team has gained significant experience and expertise in these areas. Outcomes show a steady and significant increase in 3A/A* results at GCSE. The evaluation of training and CPD provision is significantly positive, and the team has received testimonials from individual secondary schools praising the quality and suitability of support packages designed and delivered.
