School Improvement Officer Support
CEA@Islington School Improvement Officers are well qualified and effective
providers of support and advice. All primary Link School Improvement Officers
have headship experience and are current OfSTED team inspectors (or are in the
process of training). All secondary Link School Improvement Officers are
OfSTED trained and prior to their appointment held senior posts in secondary
schools or led on national initiatives. Across the team there are accredited
External Advisers, Threshold and Basic Skills Agency Quality Mark Assessors.
There is high level expertise across the range of educational issues. Through
its own performance management arrangements CEA@Islington is fully committed
to maintaining a high quality team, fully appraised of local and national
initiatives, that can support schools in the drive for school improvement.
This range of expertise and services offered is reflected in the core days
indicated in the “Work In Support Of Schools” document.
Services Provided:
School Improvement Officers provide additional support and advice to Islington
schools purchasing an Enhanced Services Agreement. We support them in ensuring
best value from the package of support, consultation and advice which includes:

Designated days of tailor made school specific support, consultation, advice
and training.

Quick and efficient telephone and e-mail response, consultation and advice on
operational and strategic issues.

Pre and post OfSTED support and advice including the writing of action plans.
-
School based in-service training – staff meetings and INSET days.
-
Support and advice for Workforce Remodelling.
-
Help with complaints, disciplinary and grievance procedures.
-
In-depth review of the quality of teaching, learning and achievement with a
formal report and specific recommendations for improvement.

Development of the role of subject managers and other senior staff.
-
Support for personal and preferrential development of staff.
-
Support and training in lesson observations, feedback to teachers and the
development of action plans.

Training and support for teaching assistants.

Attendance at staff meetings and conferences.
-
Support for specific teachers to improve planning and delivery.

Specific support on assessment and record-keeping
-
Additional support to promote, monitor and evaluate effective performance
management.

Support for Basic Skills training.

Subject expertise to cover the whole curriculum - either from within the
service, as, for example, in the case of Design and Technology, Physical
Education and Modern Foreign Languages, or from consultants with proven
expertise.

Help with interpreting and implementing government documents and orders.

Individual advice and support for headteachers and other teachers.

Initiation or support of curriculum and other projects.

Specialist knowledge and experience in special educational needs, bilingual
learning and equal opportunities.

Advice and assistance with the recruitment and retention of staff.

Induction of new staff.

Advice to governors and contributions to governors’ meetings or panels.

Advice on developments and resources in subject areas.

Advice on use of in-service training time and funding.

Additional support for new and acting headteachers and deputy headteachers.

Facilitating and supporting school based research.

Support for high quality provision in the Foundation Stage.

Support for the effective use of new technologies.
