LATEST PARTNERSHIP NEWS!
For the first time Islington exceeded national targets (80% 2006/07) for the PSA target at 88% participating in 2 hours high quality PE and school sport in a typical week. From September 2008 the new PSA target will be increased to 5 hours (2 hours in the curriculum and 3 hours outside).
16 of our Primary schools received the Primary kitemark Active mark:
Ashmount, Gillespie, Highbury Quadrant, Duncombe, Sacred Heart, St John’s Highbury Vale, St Jude and St Paul’s, St Andrews, St Lukes, St Marks, St Mary Magdalene, William Tyndale.
A big congrats to them, the award lasts for 12 months and the award will be presented this term.
Schools received the Activemark if:
- 90% or more of pupils across the school were doing 2 hours of PE and Sport (question 2 of PESSCL survey)
- the school held a sports day; and
- the school had met or bettered the national average for the range of sports it offers or the percentage of pupils participating in sports clubs linked to their school or school sport partnership.
The Islington School Sport Co-ordinator Programme
The SSCO programme is a national programme which has the key purpose of increasing sporting opportunities for more young people through coordinated physical education, school sport and out of hours learning activities that effectively link with existing local community sports facilities and sports development programmes.
There are five full-time School Sport Co-ordinators (SSCOs) who are school-based, and one full-time Partnership Development Manager (PDM), Sarah Fretwell, who is based at CEA@Islington.
The SSCOs coordinate activity in two Family of Schools each. A Family consists of a host Secondary school and up to six cluster Primary schools. All of Islington's primary, secondary and special schools are now involved in the partnership. To download the partnership's families of schools, click on the links to the right of this page.
The SSCOs conduct Family meetings at least once a term with representatives from all Primary schools and the host Secondary school. The SSCOs also have Borough roles including different key sports and other developmental areas such as disability sport, equal opportunities, curriculum working parties, school sport associations and funding.
THE PE, SCHOOL SPORT & CLUB LINKS STRATEGY (PESSCL)
The information below details the 8 areas covered by the Government's PESSCL strategy - the main aim of which is to: "enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities by five- to sixteen-year-olds by increasing the percentage of school children who spend a minimum of two hours each week on high quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum from 25% in 2002 to 75% in 2006 and 85% by 2008." And by 2010 the aim is to offer all children at least 4 hours of sport every week, comprised of at least 2 hours high quality PE and sport at school and the opportunity for at least a further 2-3 hours beyond the school day (delivered by a range of school, community and club providers).
What is the PESSCL strategy?
The Physical Education School Sport Club Links strategy incorporates eight different strands, supported by £459 million from central government.
1.
Specialist Sports Colleges
A school that specialises in physical education and school sport as a vehicle for continued whole school improvement
2.
School Sport Partnerships
A cluster of schools (primary and secondary) that act as a ‘Family’ to share PE expertise, facilities, coaching and professional development. There is a School Sport Coordinator designated to each Family.
3.
Professional Development
This programme will ensure that teachers and others have the tools and expertise they need to deliver high quality physical education and school sport. Modules follow a number of different themes and are delivered by local tutors for free
4.
Step into Sport
Step into Sport encourages involvement in sports leadership and volunteering.
5.
School / Club links
Provides the link between high quality physical education and sporting opportunities in the local community
6.
Gifted and Talented
This programme aims to improve the range and quality of teaching, coaching and learning for talented sports people. The Youth Sports Trust have a dedicated site called talent ladder (www.talentladder.org/index.html)
7.
Swimming
Raising the profile of swimming in the PE curriculum via a new swimming charter
8.
QCA PE and Sport investigation
The QCA is working closely with schools and partnerships across England to investigate high quality PE and school sport.
How are we supporting physical education in schools' in Islington?
All schools is Islington are now involved in the Islington School Sport Partnership and every year (usually May/June) they complete the PESSCL survey to highlight what the offer pupils in PE and School Sport. The PESSCL questions are below and the results drive the objectives and targets in the Partnership Development Plan. In 2004/2005 58% of all Islington pupils participated in at least 2 hours of high quality PE and OSHL in a typical week (Question 2, PSA target).
Q1. What is the total curriculum time in minutes that all pupils in each year group spend taking part in PE in a typical week?
Q2. What is the total number of pupils in each year group who participate in at least two hours of high-quality PEand out-of-hours school sport in a typical week?
Q3. What is the total number of pupils in each year group involved in intra-school competitive activities in a typical week?
Q4. What is the total number of pupils in each year group who have taken part in inter-school competition during this academic year?
Q5. Which of the following sports or activities has your school provided this academic year?
Q6. For which sports or activities do you have links to clubs?
Q7. What is the total number of pupils in each year group who have participated in one or more community sports, dance or multi-skill clubs with links to the school during this academic year?
Q8. This academic year did you target out of hours school sport opportunities by age, disability, ethnicity, G&T, gender, religion, SEN
Overall, the Sports team ultimately aims to provide, increase and sustain learning opportunities in PE and school sport that assists in the achievement of wider Borough priorities and objectives such as the Education Development Plan, Education Action Zones and the Islington Council Sports & Leisure Strategy.
The Local Area Agreement Out of School Hours Funding (LAA OSHL)
This funding Programme is specifically aimed at supporting sport projects taking place out of school hours that have clearly identified learning outcomes. It is an extension of the existing BLF OSHL Programme provided by both the Islington SSCO Programme and Learning Plus at Islington; a team that works with schools, local organisations and teams within LBI and CEA@Islington to provide an extensive programme of Out of School Hours Learning (OSHL) in Islington. The SSCO partnership uses this funding to help deliver the OSHL Objective listed above in the Partnership Development Plan.
National PE CPD Programme
In October 2002 the Government launched its PE, School Sports and Club Links Strategy (PESSCL), which pledged over £450m to improving standards of PE and School Sport in England and Wales. One of the eight parts of PESSCL is to support professional development of teachers and adults other than teachers (AOTTs) such as coaches. Although the programme is being rolled out nationally it is organised and managed by Local Delivery Agencies (LDA). CEA@Islington will act as the LDA for all schools in Islington.
The LDA facilitates a series of courses taken from a menu of primary and secondary modules.
These modules are designed to improve the quality of teaching in PE as well as to explore the role PE and School Sport has to play in supporting whole school improvement. This is evident in the themes used to group the modules:

TOPs Programme
The TOP programme forms a sporting pathway along which young people can progress according to age and development. Vicki Garrett is Islington’s TOP Development Officer and one of the borough's five SSCOs. With the programme in place the uptake on primary teacher courses over the last year has been excellent with over 75 teachers attending a variety of TOPS courses offered. Open courses have successfully been run for all Islington teachers in TOP football, TOP dance, TOP Gymnastics and TOP Play and Sport while Duncombe, St Andrews and Hargrave Park Primary schools have all had whole school INSET training.
