Truancy and attendance
The Education Welfare Service (EWS), as part of the Education Welfare and
Social Work Service, primarily delivers the LEA’s statutory functions in
relation to pupil non-school attendance.

Attendance Strategy and Partnership
The Borough has an agreed
strategy to raise pupil attendance, which has been agreed across a number of
agencies. In addition work has been undertaken to develop a partnership
approach.

within the borough over the past few years. Detailed information regarding
pupil attendance is provided here.
Guidance for Schools
Detailed guidance is provided to schools
on raising pupil attendance.
Allocation of Staff and Services to Schools
EWO’s are
allocated to schools as the focal point of service delivery, allocations are
outlined.
Referrals
Schools may make referrals to EWS by telephone or in
writing. Each school has an allocated EWO who will be the key point of liaison
over referrals. Parents may self refer.
Approach to Statutory Action
The EWS approach to statutory
action is outlined, including working within a fast track approach and making
full use of Fixed Penalty Notices.

Truancy Watch
CEA@Islington works closely with the police on carrying out regularly truancy
patrols, boith focussing on children out of school without their parents and
on parents who are inappropriately keeping their children out of school. In
addition there are a number of community initiatives that seek to improve
pupil attendance.
