Community Cohesion
Welcome to the Community Cohesion section of the website. Here you will be
able to find a range of guidance documents and links in order to support your
school in meeting the duty to promote community cohesion. This comes into
force on September 1st 2007. From September 2007, OFSTED will cover schools’
contributions to the promotion of community cohesion in their inspections.
For the most recent detailed report and case studies, ‘Our Shared Future’ by
Darra Singh, Chair of the Commission on Integration & Cohesion, June 2007, go
to
www.integrationandcohesion.org.uk
For the DFES draft consultation document, go to:
communitycohesion.consultation@dfes.gsi.gov.uk
For more details, including some definitions of community cohesion, and how
this duty relates to your Race Equality policy and action planning,
CEA@Islington’s Ethnic Minority Achievement Service has prepared a briefing
document which can be downloaded here.
Meeting the duty will involve the development of schools’ citizenship and
PHSCE programmes. There will be roll-out in secondary schools of new materials
from QCA to support this. Please download the powerpoint presentation which
explains this in more detail, including how primary schools can meet the duty.
We are currently calling for case studies from local schools in order to help
schools to develop a meaningful approach to community cohesion. These case
studies will be posted on the website.
You will also find here a summary of national case studies collated by the
Commission on Integration & Cohesion.
Training will be offered to heads and governors in September 2007, see Heads’
letter.
