Children Looked After

The REACH Team - Raising the Educational Achievement of Children and young people in care to the virtual school in Islington.

The REACH Team is a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary team, based within the Policy and Performance Service, Cambridge Education @ Islington and the Children’s Looked After Service, Children’s Social Care. The team carries out the work of the Virtual School for Children Looked After to Islington Children’s Social Care and those young people who attend Islington schools in care to other boroughs to raise the educational achievement of children and young people in care.

The REACH Team provides training, advice, guidance and support to schools, Children’s Social Care, young people, foster carers, other professionals and ‘Corporate Parents’ to improve the educational outcomes and aspirations of children looked after

The REACH Team will:

• Champion the educational needs of children and young people looked after to Islington and those children and young people who are in care to other boroughs that attend Islington schools.
• Promote continuity and stability of education, even when care placements are disrupted.
• Facilitate the Personal Education Plan (PEP) and ensure its effectiveness.
• Track the educational progress of children and young people in care to Islington and those young people in care to other boroughs attending Islington schools.
• Monitor the attendance of children in care to Islington Children’s Social Care services.
• Coordinate and deliver multi-agency training to Corporate Parents.
• Support the work of designated teachers.
• Provide support, advice and guidance to teachers, carers, social workers and parents.
• Work in active partnership with other agencies and services.
• Provide direct educational support and interim alternative education arrangements where deemed appropriate to individual need.
• Celebrate the achievements of children looked after.

All Islington schools have a named REACH Team link contact and receive regular information and news through ‘REACH OUT’, the newsletter for children looked after, carers, Children’s Social Care, Education and partner agencies in Islington.
