Timetable for building schools for the future

    Over the next 7 years, every Islington secondary school is being substantially re-built or improved.

    Islington's Vision and Strategy for secondary education will transform students' experiences of education in the future. The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme will be in 3 phases:

    Phase 1, 2007-9

    Highbury Grove School

    The 6th form consortium

    Enhanced 6th form provision on the Highbury Grove site

    Samuel Rhodes Special School

    Relocating to the Highbury Grove site (secondary students)

    Holloway School

    St Aloysius' RC College

    Phase 2, 2009-11

    Central Foundation School

    Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School

    Islington Arts & Media School

    New Directions Pupil Referral Unit

    Phase 3, 2011-12

    Highbury Fields

    Mount Carmel RC College

    Time plan for Building Schools for the Future

    2005 October - December

    • The outline business case is prepared for the overall BSF programme & for all Phase 1 schools.
    • Consultation meetings are held at each of the Phase 1 schools to discuss the planning briefs - check this website, for latest information about dates.
    • Report submitted to the Council's Executive.
    • The affordability details, range of services and overall structure of the BSF programme will be revised during this period, so it is vital that ALL schools, from every phase, are actively involved in the process.

    2006 January - March
    Area Committees consider planning briefs for Phase 1 schools
    Notice placed in the Official Journal of the European Communities for a "Preferred Partner"

    2006 April - June
    Response needed by applicants for "Preferred Partner" by May 06
    Evaluation of tenders with schools involved, until the end of the year

    2006 July - September
    Outline planning applications submitted for Phase 1 schools
    Continuing evaluation of tenders with schools involved
    Detailed work with schools on outputs:

    • What do schools want?
    • What standards are required?
    • What criteria will be used?
    • How will this assist Islington's Education Vision?

    2006 October - December
    Continuing evaluation of tenders with schools involved
    Continuing detailed work with schools on outputs

    2007 January - March
    Approval of Preferred Partner by Executive
    Detailed planning applications submitted for Phase 1

    2007 April - June
    Negotiation with Preferred Partner
    Approval of contract by Executive
    Contract signed
    Local Education Partnership created

    2007 July
    Phase 1 construction starts:
    Highbury Grove including Samuel Rhodes & 6th form consortium, Holloway, St Aloysius'
    Planned to complete in December 2009

    2008 January - March through to 2009 January - March

    Submission of planning briefs, applications for Phase 2 schools
